Elafonissi

A small island off the south west corner of Crete with white sand dunes reached by wading through the shallow (60cm) of water.
This a day trip. Outbound via Kastelli Kissamou and Platanos, returning over the White Mountains via the town of Elos and the ancient Plane Tree and Chestnut country.
The island should offer perfect tranquillity, but can become busy in July and August.
Perfect for children.
(At the southernmost part of the island is a memorial to 850 Cretan women and children who were hiding from the occupying Turkish forces to avoid deportation to the harems of Constantinople, but who were found and slaughtered in April 1824). Drive time from The Mill, approx. 1hr45mins
